Nintendo fans were recently treated to an exhilarating announcement that stirred excitement all around the world. The gaming giant unveiled a remake of the iconic The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time alongside a breathtaking 40th Anniversary Edition of its Switch 2 console, themed around the cherished series. Unsurprisingly, this special edition sold out almost instantly upon its release.
The frenzied rush to secure one of these consoles was no surprise to loyal fans. Many of us were prepared for the launch day digital dance involving marathon online queues, chaotic website crashes, and frantic page refreshes. It seems like an expected part of any major release, and yet, according to Nintendo, the company was caught off guard by the magnitude of this particular surge in demand.
In a candid conversation, Bill van Zyll, vice president and general manager of Nintendo in Latin America, expressed surprise at how quickly the Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition Switch 2 sold out. Despite anticipating a strong reception, the overwhelming global response took Nintendo by surprise. With pre-sales reaching their maximum capacity in numerous markets, it’s clear this phenomenon was truly far-reaching.
The United States notably exceeded expectations, but this was not an isolated case. Across the globe, these special edition consoles are vanishing from shelves, both virtual and physical. Notably, Brazil experienced a similar scenario as fans snapped up the limited supply during pre-sales.
Recognizing the unmet demand, Nintendo is now fully engaged in efforts to replenish stock both of the special hardware and the accompanying software. Fans waiting eagerly for another chance should exercise patience as Nintendo works toward resupplying markets worldwide.
Reflecting on past releases, it’s remarkable that Nintendo did not anticipate this level of popularity, given the iconic status of The Legend of Zelda and the successful sales of themed editions like the Animal Crossing: New Horizons Switch. However, even veterans in the gaming world can be taken by surprise by such heartfelt fan enthusiasm.
For those who missed out, keeping a watchful eye on retailers and Nintendo’s own online store could bear fruit in the days leading up to the exciting remake’s release on November 5 and the special edition console’s launch on October 29.
