Halo’s Abandoned Projects: Unveiling the Future of the Franchise

The gaming world is no stranger to shocking industry shifts, but few have rattled fans quite like the recent acquisition of Xbox’s beloved Halo franchise by Activision. Even as this development continues to unfold, intriguing glimpses into what could have been remain. For those invested in the Halo universe, a new report from prominent YouTuber HiddenXperia offers a compelling look at the projects that never saw the light of day, thanks to the sweeping changes at Halo Studios.

Once a powerhouse of innovation and creativity, Halo Studios has been significantly downsized as part of Xbox’s broader restructuring strategy. The trims were so severe that only a core support team remains, tasked with maintaining current Halo games, organizing events, and finalizing an upcoming novel. This downsizing followed shortly on the heels of their latest offering, Halo: Campaign Evolved—a remake of the iconic original game that focused exclusively on campaign content.

According to HiddenXperia, Halo Studios was on the cusp of branching out into new gaming genres before the hammer came down. Anonymous sources, once key players in the studio’s vision, reveal they had been toiling away on a hybrid multiplayer experience that combined elements of battle royale and extraction shooters. This intriguing blend began as Project Tatanka, a pure battle royale concept that offered a massive playable environment composed of several well-known Halo multiplayer maps.

Over time, Tatanka morphed into Project Ekur. This concept reimagined the Halo experience by placing multiple squads on Zeta Halo, faced with an ever-shrinking map—a familiar element to battle royale fans. However, Ekur promised more than just survival. Players could choose between a UNSC Spartan or a Banished Brute for the first time, battling not only rival teams but also confronting the dreaded Flood. This faction, akin to zombies in the Halo universe, was set to take over parts of the map, offering both a terrifying gameplay twist and a narrative link to an eventual Halo 7 installment. Players even had the option to team up against a larger-than-life boss, similar to the colossal events seen in Gears of War.

As the development of Halo: Campaign Evolved progressed, it appears the studio’s focus shifted. Their ambition to design a traditional Halo multiplayer game in Unreal Engine gradually eclipsed the extraction shooter concept. Sadly, even this was not to be. The report suggests all efforts were redirected to rescue Campaign Evolved’s troubled production.

But hope springs eternal among veteran Halo developers. Some suggest that Activision now has a golden opportunity to craft the greatest Halo game ever. A winning strategy might include rehiring talent from Bungie, the original creators of the Halo series, as well as the skilled individuals formerly at Halo Studios.

As we await to see how these changes will reshape the future of the Halo series under Activision’s wing, one thing remains certain: the rich, tactical, and narrative-driven potential of Halo offers endless possibilities.
