Alfonso Gomez-Rejon Directs Afterlife with Archie Pilot for Disney+

Ready your popcorn and horror survival kit because Riverdale is about to plunge into a nightmarish apocalypse! Alfonso Gomez-Rejon, the esteemed director known for his acclaimed work in Me and Earl and the Dying Girl and Hunters, is stepping into the chilling world of Afterlife with Archie. This thrilling TV series adaptation of the popular comic book series was officially greenlit by Disney+ in July, and fans are already buzzing with anticipation.

Gomez-Rejon is set to direct the pilot of Afterlife with Archie, bringing his unique visionary style to the eerie and unpredictable streets of Riverdale. Not only will he direct the pilot, but he’ll also direct the second episode, cementing his creative influence early in the series. Serving as an executive producer, Gomez-Rejon will undoubtedly leave his mark on the unfolding horror drama.

The story, based on the bestselling series by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Francesco Francavilla, offers a fresh and terrifying spin on the familiar Riverdale universe. Imagine a town where the charming complexities of teenage life suddenly intermingle with the spine-chilling presence of the undead. When a supernatural spell concocted by a certain magically-inclined teen backfires, Riverdale is thrust into chaos, overrun by an army of the undead. Friendship, romance, and loyalty are put to the ultimate test as Archie and his friends fight for their very survival.

Spearheading the production, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Jimmy Gibbons are lending their expertise via Muckle Man Productions under an overall deal with WBTV. Alongside them, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman from Berlanti Productions, as well as Jon Goldwater for Archie Comics Studios, bring industry strength to this must-watch series.

Gomez-Rejon’s prolific career speaks volumes about his adeptness at handling both intensity and character-driven narratives. In addition to his most famous projects, he regularly collaborates with industry legends like Martin Scorsese, seen in the upcoming documentary Aldeas: A New Story. Gomez-Rejon also had a hand in creating cinematic intrigue in The Current War with Benedict Cumberbatch, and his Emmy-nominated direction for American Horror Story: Coven etched his name as a master in suspenseful storytelling.

The director’s exciting future endeavors include the Apple TV series Stowaway starring Oscar Isaac, the film The Fortress of Solitude, and a TV adaptation of Edna Ferber’s book Giant for Amazon. Represented by CAA, Untitled, and JSSK, his roster is as diverse as it is impressive.

Riverdale’s descent into the dark realms of the undead promises to be riveting. As Gomez-Rejon’s chilling vision unfolds on Disney+, prepare for an adventure where the only thing scarier than zombies is trying to survive being a teen.
