DC Studios is set to bring a chilling new addition to its universe, as the trailer for “Clayface” has been officially released. Slated to hit theaters on October 23, this horror film delves into the sinister origins of one of Batman’s most complex antagonists. Directed by the talented James Watkins, “Clayface” promises to thrill audiences with its dark narrative and gripping performances.
The film marks the big-screen debut of Clayface, with an intense portrayal by Tom Rhys Harries. The story takes us on a harrowing journey with Matt Hagen, a struggling actor whose career and life are marred by tragedy after his face is disfigured in a brutal knife attack. Desperate to reclaim his identity and career, Matt undergoes a highly experimental medical procedure that initially appears to work wonders. However, the experiment yields terrifying results, transforming his body into a malleable clay-like state capable of morphing into anyone’s appearance.
“Clayface” was first unveiled to cinema owners at this year’s CinemaCon, and the trailer sets the stage for a bone-chilling experience. It opens with Matt hospitalized, his face wrapped in bloody bandages following the attack. The gripping scene escalates as he is injected with enigmatic chemicals, granting him shape-shifting powers. Viewers will witness the harrowing and chaotic transformations, capturing moments where Matt’s face lacks eyes or a mouth, culminating with him erasing his features in a bathtub. The transformation into Clayface completes as his shadow reveals a looming, mace-shaped fist.
Clayface has a storied legacy in the Batman universe, debuting in 1940 as a washed-up actor turned villain. Over time, shapeshifting became a defining trait of the character. Fans have previously seen Clayface in various iterations, from Ron Perlman’s portrayal in “Batman: The Animated Series” to Alan Tudyk’s recent interpretation in the HBO Max animated series “Harley Quinn.” Now, with Harries at the helm, audiences will discover a deeper, more horrifying side to Clayface.
Adding to the excitement, the film features Naomi Ackie, joining Harries in bringing this dark narrative to life. Harries, known for his roles in “White Lines,” “The Gentlemen,” “The Return,” and “Suspicion,” delivers a performance that promises to captivate and terrify.
Under the guidance of James Gunn, DC Studios is expanding its universe with thrilling stories. Following last year’s launch of “Superman,” fans look forward to upcoming releases like “Supergirl,” directed by Craig Gillespie, and highly anticipated titles such as the “Superman” sequel “Man of Tomorrow” and “The Batman: Part II,” both set to release in 2027.
“Clayface” is sure to be a standout this fall, offering fans an origin story that blends horror with the storied legacy of one of Batman’s most famous foes.
