The Ghost in the Shell Anime Premieres on Amazon Prime Video

Bandai Namco Filmworks has unveiled a tantalizing new trailer for the much-anticipated television anime series, “The Ghost in the Shell,” produced by the pioneering animation studio Science SARU. With its premiere set for July 7, fans can stream the series on Amazon Prime Video Japan at 11:30 p.m. JST (10:30 a.m. EDT), immediately following its broadcast. What makes this launch even more exciting is its exclusive global streaming on Amazon Prime Video in over 240 countries and regions, excluding mainland China, Russia, and Vietnam.

This iteration of the famed franchise marks the directorial debut of Mokochan, who is renowned for his work as a storyboarder and key animator in projects like DAN DA DAN, The Heike Story, and Tatami Time Machine Blues. The storytelling responsibility is in the capable hands of Toh Enjoe, known for his work on The Empire of Corpses and scripts for Space Dandy and Godzilla Singular Point. Shūhei Handa takes on the dual role of character designer and chief animation director, having honed his craft on Little Witch Academia, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, and Spriggan (ONA).

Adding to this powerhouse lineup is Taisei Iwasaki, the music director celebrated for his work on BELLE. He collaborates with Ryō Konishi and Yuki Kanesaka to weave a compelling auditory experience that enhances the series’ futuristic narrative.

This series comes together under the stewardship of Bandai Namco Filmworks along with key partners Kodansha, Science SARU, and Production I.G, forming the production committee. The anime debuts on television through “Ka-Anival!!”, Kansai TV and Fuji TV’s innovative anime programming block, airing on Tuesday nights at 11:00 p.m.

Adding to its illustrious debut, the film adaptation will have its global premiere with the first two episodes at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival this June. Fans can also look forward to a special screening at the Anime Expo on July 4, which will include a panel featuring Mokochan, Shūhei Handa, and other producers.

The ambitious project was first announced in May 2024, carrying with it a somber note as it follows the passing of Atsuko Tanaka, the beloved voice actress behind Motoko Kusanagi, who died in August 2024 at the age of 61.
