In the realm of Middle-earth, the darkness is on the rise. The Dark Lord Sauron is poised to forge a ring that will dominate all others and bind them to his will. Excitement is mounting as Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power gears up for its third season premiere next month. The latest buzz includes a trio of captivating posters showcasing Sauron himself and introducing new dark forces poised to assist in his quest for dominance.
While The Rings of Power has had its share of ups and downs in its first two seasons, one area where the series consistently excels is its stunning visuals, a feature prominently highlighted in these new promotional images. The first poster captures Sauron, portrayed by Charlie Vickers, leading the enigmatic Nazgnagôl.
For those not versed in the lore of Middle-earth, a pressing question emerges: Who are the Nazgnagôl? Are they akin to the infamous Nazgûl? The Nazgnagôl indeed bear a striking resemblance to the Nazgûl, the formidable Ringwraiths seen pursuing Frodo in Peter Jackson’s film adaptations. These shadowy figures may very well be the early prototypes of those same Ringwraiths. Created through Sauron’s manipulation of nine human kings with rings of power, the Nazgnagôl are the Second Age iteration of these corrupted beings. The show’s portrayal leaves room for speculation about whether they will evolve into the familiar Nazgûl by season’s end.
An official press release from Prime Video provided additional insights during San Diego Comic Con, describing the Nazgnagôl as Second Age ring-servants, predecessors to the Nazgûl also known as Ringwraiths of the Third Age. Think of them as the precursor to the terrifying Ringwraiths.
The imagery of a Nazgnagôl astride a horse conjures memories of Frodo’s frantic escape from the Shire, pursued by relentless Riders. If the Nazgnagôl can summon even a fraction of that fear, viewers are in for a thrilling season.
Alongside the Nazgnagôl, other dark forces will join Sauron’s ranks. Among them is the Balrog, awakened by the dwarves’ relentless mining in Khazad-dûm during season 2. As season 3 unfolds five years after the previous events, we wonder if this ancient beast has caused chaos in the interim or if its wrath will only now be unleashed.
In the upcoming episodes, Sauron will likely attempt to recruit the Balrog, portrayed vocally by Simon Pegg, into his malevolent plans. We can expect discussions between them to revolve around destruction, further raising the stakes in the epic battle for Middle-earth.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power returns with its first four episodes on November 11, only on Prime Video. As this new season unfolds, we can only guess at the twists and turns lying ahead in Sauron’s ascent.
