The enthralling world of the DC Universe expands with its third movie, Clayface, hitting theaters on October 23. Set in Gotham City, the storied home of Batman, the film embarks on a unique journey by focusing on its tragic villain protagonist, Clayface. Unlike many other entries in the franchise, Clayface stands alone, featuring minimal connections to the broader DCU, allowing the story to shine independently.
Produced by an ensemble of visionaries, including Matt Reeves, James Gunn, and Peter Safran, Clayface comes to life under the direction of James Watkins. Although Reeves has spent much of his career building his own Bat-verse, he fully supported Watkins’ vision to prioritize Clayface’s unique narrative without confining it to existing DCU boundaries.
“When I discussed my approach with Matt and James Gunn, they were incredibly supportive,” Watkins shares from his meeting with us in London. He continues, “Their encouragement to follow our creative instincts meant that Clayface didn’t have to adhere to a structured framework within the larger universe.” In choosing to create a standalone film, Watkins embraced the opportunity to focus solely on the rich, immersive story of Clayface.
Despite its standalone nature, the film subtly nods to the DC Universe through cleverly hidden Easter eggs. From advertisements featuring products like quirky burgers to background details in newspapers, these small, playful connections are peppered throughout, offering keen-eyed fans a treat without imposing on the movie’s independence. Watkins reveals, “We could cherry-pick from James Gunn’s fictional world for these elements, but there were no strict requirements.”
As star Tom Rhys Harries delves into the character of Clayface, he also muses over how his character might fare against the legendary Batman. Even with the film being a standalone piece, the age-old Batman versus villain chat is enough to keep fans on the edge of their seats.
From its conceptual freedom to its intriguing villain focus, Clayface promises to be an exhilarating addition to DC’s filmography. As we await its theatrical release, fans can immerse themselves in this unique cinematic exploration of character dynamics amidst Gotham’s shadowy allure.
