Cancelled Assassin’s Creed Game Footage from Ancient China Revealed

In a fascinating twist for fans of the Assassin’s Creed series, new footage has emerged online, purportedly showcasing a cancelled mainline game set in ancient China. The leaked video, sourced from developer portfolios and shared by MP1st, introduces a prototype previously known as Assassin’s Creed Destiny. This project, distinct from Ubisoft’s ongoing mobile creation Assassin’s Creed Jade, was allegedly geared for a full release on consoles and PC.

Developed by TiMi Studio Group, a Tencent subsidiary known for its work on Jade, Destiny was anticipated to explore the rich historical context of 206 BCE, during the Qin Dynasty. The footage narrates the journey of a female assassin navigating through a sacred palace under siege by the historical figure Xiang Yu and his forces, unveiling an intense boss fight with the Chinese warlord himself. Among the exciting gameplay elements shown are stealth kills, the iconic leap of faith, and innovative weapons like a spinning umbrella-like device seen in placeholders.

The cancellation of Destiny reportedly aligns with Tencent’s strategic shift away from Western franchises in 2024, aimed at boosting profit margins through domestic Chinese releases. Despite this decision, Assassin’s Creed Jade remains on track, with recent franchise head Jean Guesdon affirming its ongoing development and highlighting new features such as co-op gameplay.

Jean Guesdon, who stepped in as the head of content for Assassin’s Creed earlier this year, along with Ubisoft veterans at the helm of their new Vantage Studios, is steering the direction of the franchise forward. As the series prepares for upcoming premium titles, the saga continues with Codename Hexe, albeit under new leadership due to a change in its creative direction.

As we reflect on what could have been with Destiny, it’s clear that Ubisoft remains committed to delivering rich, well-crafted gaming experiences even as the landscape of game development evolves.
