Nintendo just dropped a surprise bombshell during this weekend’s unexpected Nintendo Direct: a brand-new trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and it’s absolutely packed with fan-service, deep-cut characters, and our first real look at Yoshi on the big screen.
If you’re a Mario fan, this trailer is a must-watch—and it confirms that this movie is leaning hard into both classic nostalgia and modern Mario world-building.
Shigeru Miyamoto returns to host the reveal
Nintendo legend and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto personally hosted the short presentation, keeping things tight and focused on new footage. The trailer opens by expanding on scenes we’ve already glimpsed: Mario and Luigi riding motorbikes across a vast desert, echoing earlier marketing but now with more context and detail.
The brothers are headed toward a major Mario Odyssey callback: the inverted pyramid in the Sand Kingdom. It’s immediately clear that The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will be weaving together elements from across the series, not just the Galaxy games.
Mario and Luigi’s fiery mission in the Sand Kingdom
In this new sequence, Mario and Luigi are tasked with clearing out a rogue Warp Pipe inside the inverted pyramid. Before heading in, they grab Fire Flowers, instantly powering up with their iconic white-and-red outfits. Longtime fans will appreciate that the movie isn’t shy about making power-ups a central part of the action.
As the duo venture into the dark interior, the unmistakable underground theme from the Mario series kicks in. The music choice is a deliberate nostalgia hit, signaling that the movie will continue the first film’s tradition of remixing classic Mario tracks for cinematic moments.
Inside, the brothers find the blocked Warp Pipe—and something trapped within.
Yoshi finally makes his big-screen debut
Inside that pipe is none other than Yoshi, making his full big-screen debut after being heavily teased at the end of The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Instead of a menacing enemy, Yoshi appears frightened and unsure of Mario and Luigi at first, clearly not the boss battle they were expecting.
Later shots make clear that Yoshi doesn’t stay scared for long. We see him quickly fall in with Mario, Luigi, and the rest of the crew, joining the adventure as a proper member of the gang. The trailer also offers our first real hint at how Yoshi will sound in the film—he can mumble a few words and, of course, shout his own name.
Fans who remember the cracking green Yoshi egg in the first movie’s post-credits scene will finally feel that teased payoff. This is the moment many have been waiting for.
Lava levels, Bowser vibes, and a Frog Suit rescue
The trailer then cuts into a rapid-fire montage of new settings and action scenes. One of the standout locations is a fiery, lava-filled fortress that looks straight out of a Bowser’s Castle level. Mario and Peach are seen infiltrating this dangerous area together, showcasing more of their partnership and hinting at a multi-pronged story structure.
Another highlight sees a Toad being swallowed whole by a gigantic Cheep Cheep. In a direct nod to classic Mario power-ups, Luigi saves the day while wearing the Frog Suit, a fan-favorite transformation from the 2D games. It’s a clear signal that the film will be pulling from Mario’s full power-up history, not just the modern 3D entries.
Classic deep cuts: Birdo, Mouser, and Lakitu appear
The trailer doesn’t stop at just Yoshi. In another montage, we get our first look at Birdo, who is shown angrily launching eggs at Princess Peach. Peach defends herself with her parasol, and for a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment, the camera reveals Mouser—an old-school rodent boss from Super Mario Bros. 2.
Seeing Birdo and Mouser in the same sequence feels very intentional. Both characters hail from the dreamlike world of Subcon in Super Mario Bros. 2, and their inclusion suggests Peach might have her own separate sidequest. It’s easy to imagine her tackling a Subcon-inspired storyline early in the film while Mario and Luigi are still occupied in the Sand Kingdom.
The trailer keeps the nostalgia rolling with the first cinematic appearance of Lakitu. From his cloud, Lakitu rains down projectiles on Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi, giving fans that familiar sense of airborne annoyance they’ve known since the earliest Mario games.
Baby Mario and Baby Luigi return with a wild twist
Near the end of the trailer, things take a bizarre, intriguing turn. We see Yoshi clutching what looks very much like the SNES Super Scope, the classic light gun peripheral from the 16-bit era. It’s an unexpected but clever retro callback, and it raises some big questions about how deep the film will dive into Nintendo history.
Alongside Yoshi, Toad is seen holding Baby Mario and Baby Luigi, confirming the return of their baby forms. The group is squaring off against a massive T-Rex that looks almost identical to the one from Super Mario Odyssey. This mash-up of Baby Mario-era imagery, Odyssey-style enemies, and legacy hardware references suggests a movie unafraid to mix and match eras in delightfully weird ways.
Animation finished, now in post-production
Following the trailer, Illumination boss Chris Meledandri checked in with a production update. According to Meledandri, animation work on The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is now fully complete. The film has moved into post-production, with the team focusing on sound, music, and final polish.
One of the most exciting details for longtime fans is that themes from the Super Mario Galaxy games are being re-recorded for the movie’s soundtrack using a 70-piece orchestra. Considering the original Galaxy games are often praised for having some of the best music in Nintendo history, this orchestral treatment should give the film a truly epic, cosmic soundscape.
Mysterious voices: No new cast members revealed
Despite Yoshi finally appearing—and speaking—Nintendo chose not to reveal who is voicing him. The company also didn’t announce any additional new voice actors for other characters, keeping that part of the production firmly under wraps.
Rosalina and Bowser Jr., who were heavily spotlighted in the previous dedicated Mario movie Direct back in November, are entirely absent from this new trailer. That earlier presentation confirmed Rosalina would be voiced by Brie Larson and that Bowser Jr. would be voiced by Benny Safdie, but this new footage seems focused on expanding the core Mario cast and showcasing Yoshi’s arrival.
The returning main cast from the first film is still intact:
Chris Pratt as Mario
Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach
Charlie Day as Luigi
Jack Black as Bowser
Keegan-Michael Key as Toad
Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek
Nintendo previously teased that this sequel would feature some “really deep cuts” from across its character library, and this trailer backs that up with Mouser, Birdo, Lakitu, and classic references like the Frog Suit and Super Scope. It also keeps fan theories alive—especially those speculating about the relationship between Peach and Rosalina and what this Galaxy-focused storyline might finally confirm.
New release date for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will now hit theaters on April 1, arriving two days earlier than first announced to better sync with international releases. With animation complete and marketing kicking into high gear, expect more trailers and character reveals as we get closer to launch.
Between Yoshi’s long-awaited debut, deep-cut villains like Mouser, Mario Odyssey-inspired environments, fully orchestrated Galaxy music, and Illumination’s polished animation, this sequel is shaping up to be one of the biggest video game movies yet.
