Xolo Maridueña is making a triumphant return as Blue Beetle in the upcoming DCU movie, Man of Tomorrow. He is set to reprise his role as Jaime Reyes, a teenager who gains superpowers from an alien beetle, a character he first brought to life in his 2023 solo movie. Despite the buzz surrounding his return, specific details on how Jaime Reyes will fit into the Superman follow-up, directed by the visionary James Gunn, remain under wraps. However, it’s clear that DC Studios’ co-CEO Gunn has long had an eye on integrating Blue Beetle into his universe.
James Gunn, who once appeared on Michael Rosenbaum’s podcast, praised Blue Beetle as “the first DCU character.” Interestingly, he also noted that “the first full DCU movie is Superman,” leaving fans somewhat perplexed about the movie’s canon status. Nevertheless, it suggests that while the character is essential to the DCU, the solo movie’s events may not be entirely canon.
Looking ahead, Gunn has expressed confidence that Reyes will “fit in very nicely” with the revamped DCU. In 2025, he mentioned that incorporating Blue Beetle would only require a “couple things” to be retconned, similar to Peacemaker’s introduction. This adaptability ensures that the character aligns seamlessly with the evolving DCU landscape.
Man of Tomorrow promises to be an exciting spectacle, with David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult leading the charge as Clark Kent and Lex Luthor, respectively. They’ll be taking on the formidable Brainiac, alongside an impressive ensemble cast featuring Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl, Milly Alcock’s Supergirl, Aaron Pierre’s Green Lantern, and Adria Arjona’s mysterious hero. Following the underwhelming box office performance of Supergirl, anticipation is high for the DCU’s upcoming projects.
