Tomb Raider Series Faces Safety Breaches During Production

Lara Croft’s thrilling adventures are being revitalized in Amazon MGM Studios’ new Tomb Raider series, scripted by none other than Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge. While the production at Shinfield Studios promises to take fans on a wild journey, it’s also been a challenging path behind the scenes, particularly concerning safety regulations. Recently, Britain’s Health and Safety Executive (HSE) uncovered that the series breached UK safety laws, stirring nationwide attention.

It’s not every day that a high-profile TV production finds itself in the spotlight for health and safety breaches, but that’s exactly what happened with the new Tomb Raider series. Project Temple Productions Ltd, the company behind the series, has been cited for failing to comply with the Health and Safety At Work Act 1974 and the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002. Specifically, the production failed to ensure that crew members underwent crucial biological monitoring when using isocyanate paints, which can lead to serious health effects, including asthma.

Typically, HSE guidelines require that anyone spraying isocyanate paints wear appropriate personal protective equipment, as the produced mist can linger for an extended period. In response to this oversight, HSE issued an “improvement notice” to Project Temple Productions in April. Thankfully, the necessary measures were promptly implemented, ensuring the safety of the production crew going forward.

Beyond these production hurdles, the series faced additional challenges when Sophie Turner, who takes on the iconic role of Lara Croft, sustained a minor injury on set. This incident led to a brief two-week pause in production, yet anticipation for Turner’s portrayal remains high. To add to the excitement, the star-studded cast includes Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, and more, each set to bring their unique talents to the epic saga.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge is not only credited as the series’ creator and writer but also serves as an executive producer and co-showrunner alongside Chad Hodge. The team bringing this epic narrative to life also includes a host of creative minds such as Jonathan Van Tulleken and several seasoned executive producers who further cement the series’ ambitious scope.

Despite the challenges, Tomb Raider is gearing up to be a thrilling journey for fans and a noteworthy addition to the Prime Video lineup. With production issues resolved, there’s a fresh wave of excitement surrounding the high-stakes adventure that awaits.
