It’s been nearly two decades since The X-Files: I Want to Believe hit theaters, leaving many fans, including myself, feeling underwhelmed and disappointed. Now, Chris Carter is finally bringing his original darker vision to life with the new director’s cut, The X-Files: I Want to Believe Vrach Frankenshteyn. EW has unveiled the chilling first trailer, and I have goosebumps just thinking about it.

The subtitle, Vrach Frankenshteyn, which translates to “Victor Frankenstein” in Russian, is a fitting nod to Carter’s desire to resurrect the movie he always imagined. When the film debuted in 2008, it was six years after The X-Files series ended, and the reunion of Mulder and Scully, portrayed by David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, was highly anticipated. However, the final product left me booing during the credits, feeling the sting of a compromised vision due to studio interference.

The new trailer, however, signals a transformative shift toward full-blown horror, featuring elements like two-headed dogs and gruesome body mutilations that we didn’t see in the original. It appears Carter has unleashed the horror movie he initially set out to create, and these vivid, terrifying visuals suggest a movie that sticks faithfully to his original dark intentions.

The revamped focus on mutations and beastly creatures makes me suspect that the rumored werewolf head from the set long ago was indeed part of Carter’s initial plan. If this is true, the version we are now anticipating could align much closer with his creative vision, unhindered by the constraints of a PG-13 rating.

Scheduled to premiere on Hulu on August 14, The X-Files: I Want to Believe Vrach Frankenshteyn promises to revive the thrill and fear that were supposed to characterize this story from the start. As Carter himself expressed, this is no ordinary director’s cut; it’s an opportunity to bring to life what was lost on the editing floor.
