Netflix fans of The Witcher are in for a bit of a disappointment as the highly anticipated return of Geralt seems to have been postponed yet again. Recent reports suggest that The Witcher Season 5 won’t hit screens until 2027, pushing it back from its previously expected 2026 release date. This news comes from What’s on Netflix, which indicates that the anticipated release was quietly removed from the 2026 calendar.
What makes this delay particularly surprising is the completion of filming back in 2025. According to fantasy fan site Redanian Intelligence, production wrapped up in September of that year, yet fans are looking at a potential two-year wait since the end of Season 4, which aired in October.
The journey of Netflix’s The Witcher hasn’t been without its ups and downs. From its initial casting announcement of Henry Cavill as Geralt in 2018, fans have been vocal about their expectations and disappointments. Cavill’s exit after Season 3, with Liam Hemsworth stepping into the iconic shoes of Geralt for Season 4, marked a significant turning point for the series.
Despite hopes for a seamless transition, Season 4 faced critiquing eyes. It scored a mediocre 59% on Rotten Tomatoes for critics, and a harsh 19% from general audiences, suggesting dissatisfaction was common. Even viewership statistics reflected the show’s struggles, lacking the impact of its predecessors. Yet, IGN still managed to find merits in this tumultuous season, offering a 7/10 rating.
Adding to the changes was the recasting of Vesemir, with Peter Mullan replacing Kim Bodnia. This, combined with earlier controversies around alleged disrespect toward source material by some writers, seems to have alienated a fraction of the fanbase.
Currently, there’s no confirmed release date for the show’s finale, nor any official commentary on why the delay has happened. In the meantime, dedicated fans can always turn to the original books to fill the void.
