The wait is over, Star Fox fans! The iconic franchise makes its grand entrance onto the Nintendo Switch 2 today, 25 June 2026, with a stunning remake of the beloved Star Fox. Available both digitally for $49.99 and physically for $59.99, this remake by Velan Studios—known for their work on Knockout City—marks the first significant Star Fox release since Star Fox Zero in 2016.
Bearing an impressive aggregate score of 82 on Metacritic and an 84 on OpenCritic, the game stands proudly behind only the classic Star Fox 64 in terms of critical acclaim within the series. Critics have praised the remake for its breathtaking visuals and refined gameplay, though some have expressed a longing for more new content. Nintendo Life hails it as “a sublime remaster” with “stunning visual overhaul and snappy controls” but notes that veteran players won’t find any groundbreaking surprises.
Game Informer gave it an 8.25/10, applauding its dedication to preserving the essence of the original while suggesting the franchise is ripe for innovation. WCCFTech showed more enthusiasm with an 8.5/10 rating, describing the experience as “nostalgic and surprisingly fresh.” Meanwhile, Shacknews went all out with a perfect score, and Gamereactor awarded it 9/10.
Among the most intriguing updates is the new Mouse Targeting system. This innovative aiming mechanism takes advantage of the Joy-Con 2’s built-in optical sensor, allowing players to glide their controller on a flat surface for precise targeting. This addresses longstanding precision aiming challenges on consoles by removing traditional velocity curves.
Further enriching the gameplay, the remake includes fully voiced cutscenes, a sweeping orchestral soundtrack, online multiplayer support for up to eight players, a fresh Challenge Mode with additional objectives, and multiple difficulty paths through the Lylat System. Eager players had the chance to try the game with a free demo launched on the Nintendo eShop on 9 June, covering the tutorial and the Meteo stage, and allowing save data to be carried over to the full version.
As the Lylat System beckons once more, players are in for a nostalgic and revitalized adventure. Don’t miss this opportunity to revisit a classic in its finest form. Stay tuned to BlueBoxNERD for the latest updates in the vibrant world of nerd culture!
