Executive changes within Netflix and Fincher’s involvement in other projects such as The Adventures of Cliff Booth shifted the focus away from the spin-off. Additionally, Netflix’s evolving strategy to tailor Squid Game projects for individual international markets ultimately diminished the likelihood of a centralized American version.
Despite Cate Blanchett’s electrifying appearance as an American recruiter in the final moments of Squid Game, which sparked initial excitement, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk consistently denied any link to Fincher’s spin-off. Moreover, The Playlist reports there was no confirmation that Blanchett was ever formally involved with Heckler, despite her openness to return to the Squid Game universe.
