Spider-Man: Brand New Day is swinging through theaters with astonishing success, adding another $145 million to its domestic box office haul during its second weekend. Such a feat is truly remarkable, as only this year’s Toy Story 5 earned a comparable $159 million in its debut. Currently, Brand New Day boasts the third-largest second weekend in history, outpaced only by Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Avengers: Endgame. Achieving a staggering $655 million in North America and $1.67 billion globally, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is on track to challenge box office records, as audiences around the world continue to flock to see Tom Holland’s latest adventure.
Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is holding its ground, accumulating $31.5 million in its fourth weekend with a domestic total of $461 million and $1.1 billion worldwide, setting a record as Nolan’s highest-grossing film. Despite its nearly three-hour runtime, this epic is captivating audiences across the globe, particularly excelling in Imax screenings which have contributed nearly $289 million in sales.
While Spider-Man and The Odyssey dominate the box office, new releases faced tough competition. Universal’s romantic comedy One Night Only premiered with a modest $5.7 million, struggling against high expectations. The comedy Super Troopers 3 and Eli Roth’s slasher Ice Cream Man also opened to lukewarm receptions, earning $4 million and $2 million respectively, with mixed reviews.
Three indie films, though, caught the limelight amidst the box office giants. Tony, a coming-of-age story distributed by A24, opened with spectacular per-location earnings. Mubi’s Teenage Sex and Death and Camp Miasma and Magnolia’s Late Fame each found success in limited releases, building anticipation for wider rollouts.
Next weekend’s newcomers, including The End of Oak Street, PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie, and The Rivals of Amziah King, will face a challenging market while Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues to captivate audiences.
