Rohan Campbell Faces Sea Monsters in Netflix’s Below

Rohan Campbell is making waves again! After captivating horror fans with his roles as Corey Cunningham in Halloween Ends and Billy Chapman in the cult classic Silent Night, Deadly Night, Campbell is venturing into uncharted territory. Trading in slasher roles for a sea monster-filled storyline, Campbell will star as Jay Penney in Netflix’s latest limited series, Below. Joined by Josh Hartnett, known for his roles in 30 Days of Night and The Faculty, this six-episode thriller is set to debut in full on October 8.

The series introduces us to Calvin Penney, a fisherman from Newfoundland, played by Hartnett, who is desperate to shield his family and safeguard his faltering livelihood amid the chaos incited by a mysterious sea creature. As the menace from the deep sets its sights on his son Wade, portrayed by Charlie Heaton of Stranger Things fame, Calvin teams up with marine researcher Fonda, played by Mackenzie Davis from Speak No Evil and The Turning. Together, they embark on a quest to unearth the beast’s origins and explore the island’s hidden history.

Netflix recently unveiled a batch of tantalizing images from Below, showcasing the electrifying atmosphere and teasing what’s to come. These newly released visuals offer a glimpse of Campbell in character alongside the other main cast. Fans will also fondly remember the series’ trailer, which left viewers at the edge of their seats, hinting at the chaotic ferocity of the sea creature yet keeping it shrouded in mystery. The origins of the beast are linked to an ominously melting iceberg, reminiscent of an Encino Man scenario.

Alongside thrilling action and intrigue, Below promises a murderously good time with a touch of the supernatural. According to Matt Konopka from Dread Central, who reviewed the first two episodes during TIFF, “Below had me hooked by the time the second episode finished.” He highlighted the series’ gripping cast, mood, and unanticipated gore, acknowledging that although initial episodes draw on familiar sea monster tropes, they soon break the mold.

Created by Jesse McKeown, known for The Umbrella Academy, Below might just be set to carve out a place in the annals of great sea monster series. As Halloween Ends fans eagerly anticipate seeing Campbell in a new role, it’ll be exciting to watch him flex his acting prowess in a different type of horror setting.
