The once-thriving sci-fi first-person shooter franchise, Killzone, is stirring again after being dormant for 13 years. Sony appears ready to resurrect one of its classic IPs with a fresh project. Once a cornerstone of PlayStation’s first-party lineup, Killzone seemed to step back as the gaming giant pivoted towards open-world adventures. However, recent developments suggest a potential revival is in the works, and fans of the series couldn’t be more excited.
According to insider reports from MP1st, known for its deep ties to the franchise, Guerrilla Games will collaborate with an external studio to breathe new life into the Killzone series. This early-stage project may either be a remaster or remake of a beloved game, with the original 2004’s Killzone being a prime candidate. Yet, there is also speculation that what starts as a remaster could evolve into a more comprehensive reboot, paving the way for fresh narratives and enhanced gameplay experiences.
Interestingly, PlayStation entered into a co-development agreement with the creators of Outriders, People Can Fly, in March 2025. Dubbed Project Delta, this initiative reportedly focuses on an existing PlayStation IP. The pairing of Guerrilla Games and the experienced team at People Can Fly could be powerful enough to rekindle the formidable Killzone, although this connection remains speculative at this point.
Guerrilla Games currently has its sights set on another venture, Horizon Hunter’s Gathering. This live-service spin-off from the established Horizon series recently faced setbacks from a disappointing playtest but is back in the pipelines for a revamp. As the majority of the studio remains absorbed in this multiplayer expansion and a distant sequel to Horizon Forbidden West, it remains uncertain how a collaboration for a Killzone revival will intersect with their ongoing horizon of projects.
Fans haven’t had the pleasure of a new Killzone release since 2013’s Killzone: Shadow Fall, which debuted as a launch title for the PS4. While the first three mainline games of the series enjoyed anthology packaging on the PS3, they’re sadly out of reach for PS5 players. Even the classic first Killzone, introduced on the PS2, hasn’t yet seen the PS Plus spotlight as part of the brand’s classic game offerings.
With so much history resting on the Killzone name and a fervent community eagerly awaiting its return, the potential for a remaster or a reboot is undoubtedly stirring up a wealth of anticipation.
