Quake: Dawn of the Machine – 30 Years of Epic Gameplay

It has been 30 years since the original Quake launched in 1996, and gamers young and old are in for a treat as MachineGames, in collaboration with id Software, unveils Quake: Dawn of the Machine. This new episode rejuvenates the legendary first-person shooter with 19 all-new levels filled with well-kept secrets, an intriguing new Deathmatch map, and a compelling new soundtrack to intensify the experience.

Announced through Bethesda’s Slayers Club, Dawn of the Machine promises an exhilarating journey as the battle-hardened Ranger. Players will navigate a labyrinthine dimension where time dynamically folds back on itself, offering a unique looping structure. Each visit to the present reshapes the future, transcending traditional time concepts to create a fresh and engaging narrative. As you collect runes, you’ll unlock previously sealed paths rich with new routes, encounters, and well-concealed secrets. The addition of persistent health and ammunition upgrades introduces a new progression system to Quake’s classic gameplay, offering a refreshed yet nostalgic experience.

The best part? Dawn of the Machine comes as a free update for modern versions of the original Quake, ensuring fans on platforms like Xbox Series, Xbox One, Microsoft Store, Steam, Nintendo Switch, PS5, and PS4 can dive into the action without a hitch.

In the backdrop of this release, Microsoft faced criticism in April 2025 for a tech experiment demonstrating real-time AI-generated Quake 2. Despite this, MachineGames continues to innovate, with reports in January 2026 stating their involvement in developing Wolfenstein 3 and a new multiplayer game with a gameplay style reminiscent of Rainbow Six Siege. However, not all the news has been uplifting. In July 2026, id Software underwent a major restructuring, resulting in the layoff of 136 developers.

The release of Quake: Dawn of the Machine marks a significant milestone in gaming history, as the legendary franchise continues to evolve while staying true to its roots. This new episode is a testament to MachineGames’ commitment to delivering thrilling experiences while honoring Quake’s storied past.
