Polyarc Closes After 12 Years, End of Moss VR Era

Polyarc, the innovative studio behind the beloved Moss series of VR platformers, recently announced its closure, just three months after releasing its latest game on Steam. This marks the end of a 12-year journey in game development, during which Polyarc provided players with unique and memorable gaming experiences.

Founded in 2015, Polyarc made a remarkable entry into the gaming world with Moss, initially released as a PSVR exclusive. It quickly gained recognition as one of the best VR games when it launched on Steam in June 2018. Unlike most VR titles that focus on first-person gameplay, Moss brought a fresh take to the platformer genre. Players controlled Quill, the courageous mouse protagonist, while interacting with the game’s environment using VR touch controls, creating a captivating third-person experience.

The blend of classic platforming with VR’s immersive perspective led to a truly unique experience. The success of Moss paved the way for an equally impressive sequel in 2022. Together, these games earned Polyarc over 160 awards and nominations and were commercially successful, particularly on Meta platforms.

In 2025, Polyarc expanded the Moss universe with a PvP strategy spinoff named Glassbreakers: Champions of Moss, though it failed to capture a significant audience. Polyarc faced financial hurdles, including losing funding for a project in mid-development and being unable to secure a crucial deal with a third-party publisher. These challenges resulted in the unfortunate layoff of two-thirds of its staff earlier this year.

Despite these struggles, Polyarc continued its commitment to delivering quality gaming experiences. Its final release, Moss: The Forgotten Relic, launched in July, compiling the first two Moss games and The Twilight Garden expansion into a non-VR package. Developed in collaboration with Blackbird Interactive, The Forgotten Relic received positive reviews, yet it couldn’t secure the studio’s future.

Alongside announcing their closure, Polyarc shared a Google spreadsheet to aid in the future employment of their talented team members. The studio expressed gratitude for the experiences shared over the years and the joy they brought to players worldwide.

As Polyarc winds down its operations, there’s a silver lining for fans. All Moss games, except Glassbreakers, are on sale, with The Forgotten Relic at 20% off, and the VR versions of Moss and Moss 2 at an enticing half-price. If you own a VR headset, it’s a great time to experience these games as they were originally intended.
