Paramount Pictures is gearing up to bring Pierce Brown’s sci-fi novel “Red Rising” to the big screen, continuing its legacy of transforming popular literary works into cinematic experiences. According to the Hollywood Reporter, director Francis Lawrence, best known for his work on the “Hunger Games” films, is set to lead this ambitious live-action adaptation. Justin Rhodes will handle the screenplay. Rhodes is already collaborating with Lawrence on Netflix’s upcoming “BioShock” adaptation, proving the team is well-versed in the challenges of bringing intricate sci-fi narratives to life.
“Red Rising,” released in 2014, is set in a dystopian future on Mars where society is stratified by color-coded classes. At the bottom of this social hierarchy are the Reds, who tirelessly mine for helium-3, a critical resource for terraforming Mars into a habitable plant. The story follows 18-year-old Darrow, a Red who is thrust into a journey of vengeance against Nero Augustus, Mars’s ruler, after a harrowing public punishment. Infiltrating the elites as a Gold, the highest social class, Darrow becomes embroiled in a rebellion that could reshape the Martian landscape.
Since its initial release, “Red Rising” has captivated readers, prompting Brown to expand the story into a comprehensive series, including a trilogy and a separate tetralogy. Over the years, Hollywood has shown keen interest in adapting the series. Universal acquired the rights back in 2014, though the project never materialized. Brown’s attempts to translate the story into a TV series in 2018 and 2021 also failed to gain traction. However, with a powerhouse like Paramount now at the helm, there’s renewed hope for fans eager to see the book come to life onscreen.
The upcoming film will add to Lawrence and Rhodes’ impressive portfolios. Lawrence recently directed the film adaptation of Stephen King’s “Long Walk,” while Rhodes’ writing credits include “Terminator: Dark Fate” and “Robocop Returns.” This adaptation will undoubtedly be one to watch, especially given Rhodes’ history with epic sci-fi narratives like those in Amazon Prime Video’s “Secret Level.”
