Nolan’s The Odyssey: Epic Journey Hits Theaters in 2026

Thanks to Stanley Kubrick, the year 2001 will forever evoke thoughts of a space odyssey. Now, a quarter-century later, Christopher Nolan is stepping into the cinematic spotlight proclaiming 2026 as the year of The Odyssey. Nolan’s latest venture is a sprawling retelling of Homer’s epic poem, with none other than Matt Damon as the stranded Greek warrior Odysseus who faces a myriad of troubles on his long journey home.

The newly released preview of The Odyssey highlights its monumental scale, featuring interviews with the star-studded cast — including Matt Damon and Zendaya. This latest insight even provides a tantalizing glimpse of Nolan’s interpretation of the legendary Trojan Horse.

Universal has released a new featurette showcasing some of the cast members speaking on set about the epic scope of Nolan’s film. With the larger-than-life ambitions aligned with Nolan’s style, there is little doubt that The Odyssey will be… well, epic!

In a recent interview with Time, Nolan addressed criticism circulating in some less-than-informed corners of the internet regarding the historical accuracy of certain designs within the film. Nolan emphasizes that these design decisions were deeply considered. He noted, “The oldest depictions of Homeric characters tend to reflect the times in which Homer lived, so there’s a strong case for portraying them that way because that’s how the story’s first audience received it.”

The Time feature also confirmed another detail that has captivated online discussions. Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o takes on dual roles as both Helen of Troy and her sister, Clytemnestra.

Unsurprisingly, getting further details about Nolan’s next project has been a challenge, primarily because — it’s Christopher Nolan’s next film. Fortunately, The Odyssey offers a compelling narrative beyond just being another film from the visionary director behind Oppenheimer, Inception, and the Dark Knight trilogy.

The Odyssey will be Nolan’s first narrative feature entirely filmed in Imax 70mm. His experimentation with Imax began with The Dark Knight in 2008, and his increasing use of large-format film culminates with this project. One might say it is an epic story fit for an epic format.

Nolan unveiled in Empire Magazine that he, along with director of photography Hoyte van Hoytema, shot more than two million feet of film. As a point of reference, it was rumored that Kevin Costner’s extravagant film Dances with Wolves took one million feet of film, making The Odyssey all the more ambitious.

In Las Vegas, during the Universal Studio panel, Nolan shared the trials of bringing this epic poem to life, stating, “This film has been an absolute nightmare to film.” He even shared some footage, including a scene between Odysseus and Calypso, the nymph portrayed by Charlize Theron, who detains the Greek hero for years. The preview then transitions to an electrifying Trojan Horse sequence.

The first trailer was released as a two-minute spot, introducing Damon as he contemplates his arduous return from Troy’s battlefields. Odysseus’ journey is fraught with trials across sea and land, including appearances from mythic creatures of Ancient Greek legends.

Following its debut, the Imax teaser stirred an overwhelmingly positive response, with viewers reportedly “stunned” by the preview’s grandeur, calling it a “staggering achievement in modern cinema.”

As we unravel this story, based on one of humanity’s oldest texts, Nolan’s adaptation chronicles Odysseus’ arduous 10-year journey post-Trojan War, costing him valuable comrades and testing his resolve. Meanwhile, back in Ithaca, his wife, Penelope, maintains the household, warding off overeager suitors with their son, Telemachus.

The casting for The Odyssey reads like a who’s who of Hollywood’s elite. Matt Damon leads as Odysseus, with Tom Holland playing his son, Telemachus. Acting heavyweights such as Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Jon Bernthal, Charlize Theron, Elliot Page, and more, complete the ensemble.

Cosmo Jarvis, initially slated for an unspecified role, had to withdraw due to scheduling issues, with Logan Marshall-Green stepping into his shoes. Attached to preview screenings of the Universal Pictures’ Jurassic World: Rebirth, the first teaser for The Odyssey made its theatrical debut. Although many sought to film the teaser illicitly, capturing it on social media, the teaser elegantly sets the tenor of the film, reiterating Christopher Nolan’s advocacy for the traditional theater experience.

Don’t miss this momentous cinematic journey! The Odyssey is set to premiere in theaters on July 17, 2026. For updates and insights on everything nerd culture, stay tuned to BlueBoxNERD.
