Nintendo has excited gamers worldwide by unveiling a free Switch 2 update for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. The much-anticipated Version 4.0.0 update is now available to all Nintendo Switch users, yet it primarily enhances gameplay for those fortunate enough to own a Switch 2.

The headline feature of this update is its ability to support local multiplayer for 5 to 8 players on a single display specifically for the Nintendo Switch 2. This is a substantial upgrade from the previous limit of just 1 to 4 players on the original Switch console. Thanks to Switch 2’s increased power and resolution, you can now enjoy thrilling eight-player split-screen races, provided there are enough controllers and players ready to join the fun.

While original Switch controllers can still be used (including the iconic Joy-Cons and Pro Controllers), only seven last-gen controllers can connect to the Switch 2 at one time. This means for an optimal eight-player experience, at least one player will need either a Switch 2 Pro Controller or a Joy-Con 2.

Additionally, the new update introduces CameraPlay support. This allows players with a Switch 2 camera or any compatible USB camera to show their face during local multiplayer matches with 2 to 4 players and during Online Play. To ensure a secure environment, camera use is restricted to GameChat with friends, preventing interactions with random players online.

Switch 2 players will also notice an enhanced gaming experience with increased resolution and reduced loading times before races and battles, ensuring that the action starts smoother and faster than ever.

For original Switch owners, fear not—there are still a few valuable updates for you in Version 4.0.0. Player speeds have been given a slight nudge, equivalent to the effect of acquiring one coin during races. Furthermore, an exciting new “96 Races” option has been added to VS Race settings for those with the Booster Course Pass. This means players can embark on an epic marathon Grand Prix, racing through all 96 courses consecutively, doubling the previous limit of 48 races.
