Nintendo Shuts Down Mario Kart Tour: What You Need to Know

Nintendo’s latest announcement has caught the mobile gaming community by surprise, as they reveal plans to officially shut down Mario Kart Tour, their popular kart racing game for iOS and Android, on September 30. Debuting in 2019, Mario Kart Tour marked Nintendo’s increased focus on mobile apps, following the success of Pokemon GO. However, after seven years of service, this fan-favorite game is heading towards its final lap.

Nintendo has shared this news through their social media channels and official website, but has not provided a specific reason for discontinuing support for Mario Kart Tour. As of 11:00 p.m. Pacific on September 29, the game will no longer be available. They have expressed gratitude to the dedicated community that has supported the mobile kart racer over the years.

In preparation for the shutdown, the sale of Rubies, the game’s in-app currency, has already stopped. Players can still use Rubies in various shops until the service concludes. Furthermore, all automatic renewals and new subscriptions for the Mario Kart Tour Gold Pass have ceased. Current Gold Pass subscribers with a term extending beyond July 7, 2026, will continue to enjoy benefits, except for continuous-subscription bonuses, at no extra cost until service ends.

The decision to forgo an offline mode has sparked controversy, leaving many players unable to access their purchased content post-closure. This has triggered a wave of disappointment and vocal criticism on social media platforms. Despite the backlash, Nintendo has not yet addressed these concerns directly.

As Nintendo prepares to wave goodbye to Mario Kart Tour, questions arise about the future of their mobile app strategy. Will the gaming giant shift away from similar projects, or do they have intriguing plans underway for the mobile ecosystem? The next steps by Nintendo will be watched with keen interest by both players and industry watchers alike.
