With its U.S. release set for September 9th through Neon, “Hope” offers an irresistibly wild ride filled with massive alien creatures, crashing spaceships, and high-octane stunts that promise to keep audiences on the edge of their seats. Na Hong-Jin, known for his work on “The Wailing,” has masterfully crafted a 160-minute rollercoaster that exploded onto the scene at Cannes where it was screened late at night and promptly hailed as a cult classic in the making.
Starring an ensemble cast that includes Hwang Jung-Min, Zo In-Sung, Hoyeon, Taylor Russell, Cameron Britton, Alicia Vikander, and Michael Fassbender, “Hope” sets its scene in a quaint fishing village in South Korea. The story kicks off with police outpost chief Bum-seok, played by Hwang Jung-min, and officer Sung-ae, portrayed by Hoyeon, as they attempt to track down a mysterious creature responsible for catastrophic devastation. Simultaneously, fittingly draped in suspense and action, local hunter Sung-ki, played by Zo In-sung, joins the fray, adding another layer to the hunt for the extraterrestrial menace.
The trailer showcases chaotic chases and explosive gunfights that shift relentlessly from foot pursuits to car and horseback combat. As the tempo builds to a fever pitch, human versus alien confrontations unfold in a dramatic fashion that will likely leave sci-fi enthusiasts clamoring for more.
Behind “Hope” is Na’s own production company, Forged Films, alongside Plus M Entertainment, which is also managing the film’s international sales. While Korean audiences will get an early taste on July 15th, Neon’s acquisition ensures not just a North American release but also extends rights to the U.K. and Australia. The film’s international reach continues with Mubi securing it for audiences in Latin America, Italy, Spain, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Turkey.
Fans of Na Hong-Jin have even more to look forward to, as he revealed during Cannes that he’s already penned a sequel to “Hope.” This development is certain to excite those who find themselves captivated by the film’s exhilarating narrative.
