Minions & Monsters Opens Below Expectations at $63.5M

In the world of animated sequels, expectations run high, and the iconic Despicable Me/Minions franchise is no stranger to box office success. However, the latest installment, Illumination/Universal’s Minions & Monsters, seems to have sparked a bit less excitement than anticipated. Launching with a five-day start of $63.5 million in North America, the numbers fall short of the hoped-for $80 million mark. Still, the film comfortably claims the number one spot with a three-day total of $38.5 million across 4,243 theaters.

Some industry insiders were not entirely surprised by this turn of events. There were inklings that the adorable, trouble-making Minions might not hit previous highs, especially considering this debut marks the lowest opening in the franchise’s history. The original Despicable Me in 2010 previously held that title with an opening of $56.3 million, not adjusted for inflation. Fans will recall that this is the third time Universal has launched one of its Despicable/Minions films over the July 4th stretch, with past releases like Despicable Me 2 and Despicable Me 4 enjoying more robust openings.

Despite this softer domestic performance, Friday offered some hope with earnings of $16 million, marking a 48% increase from Thursday and earning it the highest-grossing domestic day for the Pierre Coffin-directed sequel. Furthermore, when one considers Minions & Monsters’ performance abroad, things start to look brighter. The film has already amassed $37.6 million internationally, boosting its worldwide total. Historically, the franchise has thrived overseas, with over 60% of its earnings typically coming from foreign markets.

On the domestic front, Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story 5 holds the second spot in its third weekend, pulling in $13 million for the day and an estimated $30 million for the weekend. This contributes to a running cumulative total of $365.3 million. In third place is Angel Studios’ Young Washington, exceeding expectations with an estimated weekend box office of $16-17 million. Fourth and fifth spots go to Warner Bros/DC Studio’s Supergirl and Universal/Amblin’s Disclosure Day, respectively.

Minions & Monsters has brought in an A- CinemaScore, suggesting that those who venture to theaters are enjoying the nostalgic ride. Slated to expand to 69 territories, the international box office will likely play a crucial role in this installment’s overall success. The Minions magic continues to captivate audiences worldwide, and even if the domestic numbers reflect a minor stumble, the global box office may well make up the difference.

Minions & Monsters takes audiences back to the 1920s, exploring the early days of Gru’s lovable henchmen amidst the backdrop of Hollywood glamour and an alien invasion. The film’s playful narrative and Coffin’s directorial finesse make it a heartwarming addition to a franchise that has already grossed over $5.6 billion globally.

For fans of the franchise and cinema-goers alike, the journey of the adorable yellow henchmen remains as charming as ever. The film not only extends their saga but also sets the stage for potential future adventures.
