The Coalition has made an impressive technical breakthrough with “Gears of War: E-Day” on the Xbox Series S by creatively leveraging the console’s SSD storage as additional RAM. This remarkable achievement allows the game to run smoothly despite the Xbox Series S’s apparent hardware limitations compared to its more powerful cousins, the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, both of which boast 16 GB of RAM versus the Series S’s 10 GB.
Microsoft’s requirement that games developed for the Xbox Series X also run on the Series S has proven challenging for developers. Compounding these difficulties is the Series S’s lack of advanced upscaling technologies like Nvidia’s DLSS or AMD’s FSR, which could have been used to render at lower resolutions and upscale effectively.
Fortunately, The Coalition’s technical director, Kate Rayner, in an enlightening interview with Digital Foundry, revealed how the team circumvented these hurdles. They employed an ingenious technique by using the console’s SSD storage as makeshift RAM. Typically, games follow a hierarchy in data storage where the CPU cache holds minimal but rapidly accessible data, RAM stores a larger quantity somewhat less quickly, and SSDs—although slower—provide substantial storage capacity.
The Coalition’s strategy involved strategically utilizing the internal SSD of the Xbox Series S to store detailed city data. When the game requires specific memory access, this data transitions from the SSD to the system RAM. Given the slower nature of SSDs compared to RAM, The Coalition specifically identified memory segments that would not cause significant performance lags if transferred from the SSD to RAM. This innovation allows for approximately one additional gigabyte of usable system memory, keeping the game running fluidly with only minor visual sacrifices, such as the removal of Lumens-based reflections to maintain a 60 frames per second performance.
This clever workaround has piqued the interest of other development teams, suggesting that it could become a standard technique for optimizing future titles on the Xbox Series S. The enthusiasm around “Gears of War: E-Day” is evident in VGC’s review, which praises the game for its thrilling action while critiquing some underdeveloped storytelling aspects.
