In a surprising turn of events, Electronic Arts has announced a reduction of three percent of its workforce alongside the closure of BioWare, an iconic video game studio admired for its exemplary role-playing games. At the time of its shuttering, BioWare was in the early stages of developing a new RPG within the Mass Effect universe. Although this game will unfortunately never be fully realized, its existence has been acknowledged thanks to a leaked trailer confirmed by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier.

However, there may still be hope for Mass Effect fans desiring more from the franchise. Prime Video’s ambitious Mass Effect TV series remains in the pipeline despite the recent upheavals. Various sources, including IGN, have indicated that the production retains its original creative team, comprising seasoned showrunner Doug Jung and adept writer Dan Casey. The project is rooted in an original narrative set after the events of the initial Mass Effect game trilogy.

While the last notable update in April 2026 seemed bleak, with reports that Amazon’s head of global TV, Peter Friedlander, requested script alterations to better resonate with wider audiences, Dan Casey has challenged this claim. He voiced his skepticism regarding the alleged focus on “non-gaming audiences,” suggesting it was news to him.

Regarding the series’ progression, there hasn’t been clarity on whether it has received a formal series order, as IGN refrained from commenting on the extent of the development. Yet, demand for the anticipated series may reach new heights in the aftermath of BioWare’s closure. For enthusiasts, this adaptation could stand as Mass Effect’s last beacon within the universe’s canon—a testament to the legacy that many hold dearly.

Fans can only hope that the TV series succeeds where many adaptations struggle and delivers a narrative befitting the beloved franchise’s storied legacy.
