Idris Elba, the charismatic star known for his compelling performances across various genres, is making waves with his upcoming directorial debut, “Above The Below.” The Lionsgate release, set to hit theaters at the end of the year, sees Elba co-directing alongside Martin Owen in what promises to be a riveting sci-fi survival narrative.
The film centers on a group of astronauts who find themselves thrust into an oceanic abyss after surviving a harrowing fall from space. As their oxygen runs low, they are faced with heart-wrenching decisions about who will risk everything to return to the surface. This high-stakes, tension-filled plot is sure to captivate audiences, blending the wonder of sci-fi with the gritty reality of survival.
Collider has provided an exciting first look with new images from the film, where Elba shines both in front of and behind the camera. Joining him in the cast are Hero Fiennes Tiffin, known from “Young Sherlock,” and Caitlin Fitzgerald from “Masters of Sex.” The screenplay is a collaborative creation, brought to life by screenwriters Elizabeth Morris, Matt Mitchell, and Vicki Sargent, promising a narrative as deep as the ocean our protagonists are trapped in.
Speculation around the release of a teaser trailer is building, especially with screenshots suggesting trailer-ready scenes. As anticipation builds towards its December 4 theatrical release, fans and film enthusiasts are on the edge of their seats, eager to see Elba’s directorial prowess unveiled.
Though Elba’s previous project, the “Masters of the Universe” remake, encountered box office challenges, it achieved monumental success on streaming platforms. With over a billion viewing minutes on Prime Video, it stands alongside “The Big Bang Theory” as one of the year’s most-watched streaming entities. Such achievements reinforce Elba’s status as a multifaceted artist capable of crossing genres effortlessly.
