The long-anticipated live-action TV series adaptation of Gargoyles for Disney Plus, previously announced by James Wan’s Atomic Monster, is no longer moving forward. This update comes directly from Gargoyles creator Greg Weisman, who confirmed in a conversation with Comics Online that plans for a live-action series are now defunct.
The original Gargoyles series aired on ABC from 1994 to 1997 and quickly gained a cult following. The show followed a group of gargoyles who awaken after a thousand years in an enchanted petrified state. Set in New York City, these mystical creatures assume the role of the city’s secret protectors, safeguarding it by night while appearing as non-moving statues during the day. The series boasted an impressive voice cast, including talents such as Tim Curry, Clancy Brown, Alan Cumming, and Matt Frewer.
In 2023, fans were thrilled when it was announced that James Wan’s Atomic Monster was set to bring this beloved animated classic to life. Gary Dauberman, known for his work as the writer of Andy Muschietti’s It and several installments in The Conjuring franchise, was tapped as the showrunner. He even teased the project’s progress as recently as 2025, hinting at the series’ darker tone and expressing excitement about the animated show coming to life. However, this excitement has been short-lived, as Disney has shelved the live-action plans.
While this news is undoubtedly disappointing for many nostalgia-driven fans, all three seasons of the original Gargoyles series continue to stream on Disney Plus, providing an opportunity for both long-time fans and new viewers to immerse themselves in the magical lore of the gargoyles.
