Square Enix has unveiled an exciting new trailer to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy X, further elevating the game’s iconic status in the world of RPGs. Released on July 19, 2001, Final Fantasy X became the first main installment in the Final Fantasy series to grace the PlayStation 2. It stood out with its groundbreaking use of fully polygonal environments, marking a significant departure from its predecessors which relied on 3D characters set against pre-rendered backgrounds. This technical leap allowed for richer storytelling and deeper immersion, contributing to the game’s monumental success.
The critical and commercial acclaim garnered by Final Fantasy X paved the way for a sequel, a first for the series. Final Fantasy X-2, launched in March 2003, continued the narrative, delighting fans with its fresh mechanics and expanded world. Over the years, both titles have received the HD remaster treatment, bringing enhanced graphics and sound to platforms ranging from PS3 and Vita in 2013 to PS4 in 2015. The PC version followed in 2016, with Switch and Xbox One ports arriving in 2019.
As part of this nostalgic celebration, Square Enix is now set to release Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster on the Switch 2, with the launch date slated for July 23. This latest version promises to harness the capabilities of Nintendo’s new platform, boasting a suite of features aimed at enriching the gaming experience. Updated character, monster, and background graphics present in full HD offer significant resolution improvements, while the music has been remastered and meticulously arranged to enhance the emotional depth of the narrative. For fans who enjoy a more streamlined experience, new quality of life features like high-speed mode and the option to eliminate random encounters have been added. Moreover, the additional elements from the Final Fantasy X / X-2 International Version have been recreated, delivering a comprehensive package for both newcomers and long-time enthusiasts.
However, it’s important to note that the Switch 2 version does not include a free or discounted upgrade for those who own the previous Switch iteration. Players eager to experience the upgraded gameplay on Switch 2 will need to purchase the game, priced at $49.99 / £44.99, once again.
