In VGC’s recent hands-on preview of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, we were left with high hopes for the final entry in this remarkable remake trilogy. Nonetheless, the sheer scope of the game caught many off guard. At the Tokyo Game Show 2026, I had the chance to speak with Final Fantasy 7 Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi. Despite concerns from fans and press about the game’s expansive scope, Hamaguchi remains unworried. He believes the public demo released in Japan this week offers a clearer picture of Square Enix’s vision for Part 3.
The game is slated for release on April 8, 2027, on PS5, Xbox, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. Despite some apprehension about the scale, Hamaguchi reassures players about the game’s design. The demo shared with the media showcased the breadth of the world, purposefully highlighting locked quests as an invitation to explore. Yet, the public demo at TGS focuses on just one chapter, providing a tighter narrative experience and giving fans a taste of what’s to come.
Among the recent announcements, two highly anticipated story DLCs have been confirmed, focusing on Vincent and Sephiroth. While specifics about the timeline of these stories remain under wraps, fans can expect deeper character exploration, akin to what was seen in Intermission.
For those opting for physical versions of Revelation, it’s important to note that additional downloads will be necessary, with the total game size exceeding that of previous entries. Hamaguchi emphasized the advantages of digital releases, allowing for last-minute fixes and performance enhancements up until launch day.
While the Complete Edition remains exclusive to Japan due to production constraints, there’s still hope that it might eventually reach Western audiences. Meanwhile, Hamaguchi teased an expanded piano mini-game related to Tifa, sure to intrigue fans seeking more layers of storytelling.
As the trilogy approaches its grand conclusion, Hamaguchi acknowledges fan support and theories proliferating online, although he remains tight-lipped about specifics. Despite this, fans can rest assured of a satisfying conclusion to a decade-long journey.
