The BBC has fired the starting gun on the regeneration of Doctor Who, launching a competitive tender process for the beloved sci-fi series’ upcoming Season 16. In a move that has the fandom buzzing, producers are now invited to pitch their vision in a bake-off-style contest aimed at reinvigorating the iconic franchise. This announcement comes on the heels of a significant creative overhaul, which was set into motion after showrunner Russell T Davies and producer Bad Wolf parted ways with the series. Additionally, Disney’s co-production deal has expired, creating a blank slate for new paths.
Ncuti Gatwa, the current Time Lord, will not be returning, setting the stage for a fresh chapter. In a document inviting submissions, the BBC stated that producers should present a vision for Doctor Who that can make its comeback in 2028/29 and ensure the franchise stays “relevant, surprising, brave and inspiring for both long-standing fans and new audiences.”
The BBC is providing flexibility in the series’ structure, whether serialized or episodic, and is open to exploring a range of episode numbers. They’ve moved away from insisting on a strict showrunner model and will incorporate episodic writers once production begins. Visuals are set to be ambitious and cinematic, competing for global viewer attention.
This new iteration will require producers to create at least one compelling companion character. The stories should transport audiences across time and space, integrating historical settings, futuristic landscapes, alien worlds, and contemporary Earth. The show must offer viewers “back of the sofa” scares and tension, but should remain accessible to families. At its core, Doctor Who must celebrate themes of curiosity, courage, intelligence, and compassion — key elements that have defined its distinctively British storytelling.
While not specific about budgetary constraints, the BBC encourages proposals for third-party investment. Once pitches are shortlisted, discussions with BBC Studios will follow, leading to final interviews in early 2027. This process could yield a contract award in March of that year.
Despite some producer hesitations about the resource demands and rights ownership, Doctor Who remains a tantalizing prospect. It represents a global brand with the power to enhance a producer’s resumé and open new doors. As BBC Studios will continue to manage distribution and related aspects, this regeneration could bring new life to an enduring classic.
