Get ready for another chilling entry in the “Smile” franchise, as David Bruckner, known for his work on the 2017 sensation “The Ritual” and the 2022 reboot of “Hellraiser,” has been tapped to direct “Smile 3” at Paramount Pictures. Fans of horror cinema will remember Bruckner’s knack for creating spine-tingling atmospheres and unsettling narratives, making him a perfect fit to take the helm of this anticipated installment.
Bruckner takes the directing reins from Parker Finn, the original creator of the “Smile” franchise. Finn both wrote and directed the prior two movies, setting a high benchmark for storytelling and suspense. While Finn steps away from the director’s chair, he remains integral to the project as a producer alongside Temple Hill. Those interested in Finn’s future ventures will be pleased to know he’s also working on a remake of the 1981 supernatural thriller “Possession” starring Callum Turner and Margaret Qualley.
The “Smile” series is known for its unique format, where each film stands alone with a fresh storyline and cast. The first film captivated audiences with Sosie Bacon playing a therapist entangled in horrific hallucinations following a patient’s death. The second film kept the fear alive with Naomi Scott as a pop singer tormented by terrifying disturbances on tour. Together, they have grossed over $350 million worldwide, a testament to the franchise’s powerful draw and haunting tales.
In this third entry, audiences can expect another original narrative, although the cast has yet to be announced. With the horror expertise of Bruckner at the helm, combined with a script penned by Nick Antosca (“Verity,” “Cape Fear”) based on a story from Finn, “Smile 3” is poised to continue the franchise’s legacy of fear.
David Bruckner’s plate is undeniably full, with exciting projects such as the reboot of “The Blob” at Warner Bros, “Mice” at A24, and “The Caretaker” starring Sydney Sweeney at Universal Pictures also in development. His involvement in “Smile 3” indicates his dedication to expanding the horror genre with contemporary flair and vision.
