Darkest Dungeon fans rejoice! More than a decade after its initial launch and six years since its last DLC, the beloved gothic RPG is making a dramatic comeback. Red Hook Studios has just unveiled a brand-new expansion: The Fire’s Edge. This update breathes fresh life into Darkest Dungeon by introducing two new, yet potentially familiar, hero classes along with fresh mechanics to heighten your adventures in the shadowy depths.
Joining the roster from Darkest Dungeon 2 are the Duelist and the Runaway. The Duelist is a complex damage dealer who masterfully navigates between the ranks, bringing high-level tactics to the battlefield. The Runaway introduces a thrilling new Burn damage type, aligning perfectly with teams that leverage Stuns and movement effects like Pull, Knockback, and Shuffle. Though these heroes initially debuted in Darkest Dungeon II, they aren’t straight imports; instead, they are “re-visioned” exclusively for the original game, offering novel ways to strategize against the dark horrors that await.
In addition to these daring new recruits, The Fire’s Edge will also incorporate unique combat mechanics, powerful trinket options, and three new districts in the Hamlet. While specifics remain a bit elusive, the promise of diving back into the dark, twisted corridors of the manor with fresh content is tantalizing enough for any ardent adventurer.
Red Hook’s return to their roots is a refreshing surprise, especially for a game that has remained a staple among fans despite the release of its successor. Darkest Dungeon’s original accolade as a “wonderfully executed, brilliantly stressful reinvention” of the dungeon crawler genre endures, as does its legacy of gripping gameplay and strategic depth. Garnering an impressive 88% in our initial review and bagging the “Best RPG” award in our 2016 Game of the Year lineup, it’s no wonder players remain loyal to the original masterpiece.
With Darkest Dungeon: The Fire’s Edge slated for release on August 18, eager fans can wishlist it now and prepare to reembark on a journey of survival, strategy, and unyielding darkness. As Red Hook Studios fulfills the demand for more content in the original title, Darkest Dungeon enthusiasts have much to look forward to as they venture once more into the deep.
