Daredevil: Born Again season 2 not only continues the story of its title hero but also marks the start of a new era with the perfect visual cue, thanks to the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen’s new suit. Throughout his time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Charlie Cox has donned several Daredevil suits, including those from the Netflix The Defenders Saga shows. These Netflix Marvel series are now firmly canon within the Marvel Studios franchise, and as such, Daredevil has showcased a wide array of looks, from homemade costumes in the original show to a vibrant red and yellow comics-accurate suit in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, among others.
In his current solo series, the hero has donned multiple versions of his Daredevil suit. Daredevil: Born Again season 1 was initially presented as a legal procedural, which meant Matt Murdock did not suit up frequently. Even after a creative overhaul, scenes featuring Daredevil in his stunning updated red costume were limited. Now, under the guidance of new showrunner Dario Scardapane, Daredevil: Born Again season 2 debuts a new black suit right in its first episode. This costume is the first featuring the iconic DDs on Daredevil’s chest. Not entirely new, Matt has painted his red costume black, infusing it with deeper meaning.
The new black suit in Daredevil: Born Again season 2 immediately evokes two significant elements. First, it reflects the MCU series’ smart decision to display the passage of time and changes in Matt Murdock’s life. With Mayor Fisk’s Anti-Vigilante Task Force on the rise, Daredevil needed a stealth suit to operate in the shadows. The second and more potent element is the homage to Charlie Cox’s original Daredevil suit from the Netflix series. Before moving on to elaborate superhero costumes, Daredevil roamed the streets in black clothes and white hand wraps, resonating with street-level MCU realism and Matt’s boxing origins.
While introducing a black suit for Daredevil is thrilling, Marvel’s execution adds even more depth. With each new episode, bits of the black suit gradually reveal the red underneath. This design choice honors Daredevil’s past while symbolically showing his journey from a hero in hiding to one with the pride to save his city, culminating in a fully red suit by the season 2 finale, synchronizing with the end of the Mayor Fisk storyline.
