Netflix and Sega Team Up: A New Era for Iconic Franchises
Crazy Taxi, the fast-paced and beloved racing game that captured the hearts of many in the gaming community, is set to make a splash on Netflix with a new film adaptation. This exciting project is part of a broader collaboration between the streaming giant and the video game powerhouse Sega.
This partnership marks a thrilling expansion in Netflix’s portfolio, featuring adaptations of iconic Sega titles including Sonic and the highly anticipated Stranger Than Heaven, a prequel in the Like a Dragon franchise. These projects will showcase a diverse range of genres and formats, including live-action comedy, kids’ animation, and live-action crime stories.
The new Sonic series, developed by Carlos Stevens and Toru Nakahara, will cater to an upper preschool audience, blending humor and emotion to highlight Sonic and his friends’ heroic antics. This fresh take is distinct from the previous Sonic Prime series, which delighted fans from 2022 to 2024.
Crazy Taxi’s film adaptation brings onboard the talented duo Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, known for their successful reboot of The Naked Gun. Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher, and Toru Nakahara, veterans from the Sonic film production teams, will produce this endeavor.
Meanwhile, Stranger Than Heaven promises a “badass action drama,” continuing the legacy of compelling storytelling in the Like a Dragon series. Nakahara, who helms production, is excited about the creative directions each adaptation is taking.
Brandon Riegg, Netflix’s VP of Nonfiction and Transmedia, highlights the unique opportunity to work with Sega’s celebrated gaming titles, each with a dedicated fanbase and rich histories. These adaptations aim to honor the original games while welcoming new audiences into their worlds.
Sega’s president, Shuji Utsumi, praises the craftsmanship Netflix brings to their adaptations, confident that the collaboration will do justice to the cherished franchises. Head Producer Toru Nakahara reflects this enthusiasm, teasing fans with promises of a “cute yet cool” Sonic series and a “hilariously crazy” Crazy Taxi movie.
For Moritz and Ascher, the Crazy Taxi film is a nostalgic nod to fans who spent countless hours navigating chaotic streets behind the wheel of a yellow cab. The movie aims to capture that exhilarating experience, resonating with both longtime fans and new viewers alike.
Amid a surge of interest in video game IPs, Netflix continues to assert itself as a leader in video game adaptations. Previous successes with animated series like Castlevania and Arcane have set the bar high, despite some less successful live-action adaptations.
Netflix remains committed to bringing compelling video game stories to the screen. Upcoming projects include a live-action Assassin’s Creed series, a Gears of War movie, and animated series based on Minecraft and Magic: The Gathering, among others.
